Mentored Troops
We know that Girl Scouting has proven to support academic success, life outcomes, and an increased capacity to become strong leaders in their own lives and communities. At Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, we also know that not everyone finds Girl Scouting familiar or easily accessible, including girls and families of color within our council area.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core Girl Scout values, and at Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, we understand representation matters. Mentored troops provide girls of color the opportunity to be a part of ethnically diverse Girl Scout troops led by volunteer troop leaders of color as they work toward badges and patches focused on leadership, STEM, outdoor skills, and financial literacy.
What does a mentored troop look like?
• Volunteer leaders will be matched one-on-one with a Girl Scout staff person to serve as co-leader for the first year.
• Membership fees, uniforms, and program fees will be offered free for the rst year, and girls may apply for fully-funded camp scholarships should they need it.
• Troops will meet twice a month, with a planned outing every other month. Meetings will center around badge-earning opportunities, as will facilitated programming.
Help Girl Scouts to:
• Inspire our girls to help make the world a better, more equitable place.
• Take action to cultivate relationships with families and Girl Scout allies in their local community.
• Cultivate authentic and holistic relationships with communities of color and community organizations that serve people of color in central Indiana.
• Lead the development of mentored troops and Girl Scouts in schools increasing pathways that actively work toward increasing the diversity and representation of girls.
