Design in Nature Badge Program - Event Description
Discover the power of nature's creativity! During the Design in Nature Badge Program, Girl Scouts explore how the natural world inspires inventors, engineers, artists, and problem-solvers. From patterns in leaves to the shapes of shells and the structure of spiderwebs, nature is filled with design ideas waiting to be uncovered-and girls will step into the role of designers as they learn how nature sparks innovation.
Through hands-on activities, guided exploration, and fun creative challenges, girls will investigate natural forms, experiment with biomimicry, and design their own natureinspired creations. This uplifting, curiosity-driven program encourages Girl Scouts to observe, imagine, and create in new ways-while building confidence and teamwork skills.
What Girls Will Experience
🌿 Explore Patterns and Shapes in Nature
Girls will examine natural objects-like flowers, pinecones, feathers, rocks, and leaves-to discover the shapes, symmetry, textures, and repeated patterns that make up the world around them. They'll learn how these features help plants and animals survive.
🌿 Discover Nature's Engineering Secrets
Participants see how natural structures-such as honeycombs, bird nests, shells, and tree roots-inspire real engineering solutions. Using hands-on materials, girls test out these natural designs and see why they work.
🌿 Learn About Biomimicry
Girls explore ways scientists and engineers copy nature to solve problems. From Velcro inspired by plant burrs to airplanes modeled after birds, they will discover real examples and imagine how they could create something new using nature's ideas.
🌿 Nature Sketching and Design Challenge
Using their observations, Girl Scouts create natureinspired sketches and brainstorm new inventions, patterns, or structures. They'll work individually or in small groups to bring their ideas to life through drawing, simple prototypes, or collaborative builds.
🌿 Outdoor Discovery Time
If the event includes outdoor space, girls will participate in a guided walk or scavenger hunt to observe natural designs firsthand. They'll collect ideas, document interesting finds, and use those discoveries in their design projects.
