A Spooktacular October Outdoor Journey Experience at Camp Dellwood (BJCSA)

As twilight falls and shadows stretch across Camp Dellwood, Girl Scouts are invited to step quietly into the wild to discover the mysterious world of Indiana's nocturnal animals. From silent-flying owls to fluttering bats and prowling opossums, Hoots in the Hollow brings the forest to life with creature-filled fun, science, and outdoor adventure-just in time for Halloween season! This October outdoor event is designed to inspire curiosity, courage, and connection to the natural world through exciting hands-on experiences, spooky (but not scary) fun, and meaningful moments under the stars.
Featured Program Activities:
🦉 Owls of Indiana-Dissect real owl pellets, investigate feather patterns
🦇 Bats & Beyond- Discover why bats are vital pollinators and mosquito hunters. Use echolocation games, make bat crafts!
🦝 Critters of the Campsite-Explore the lives of raccoons, opossums, foxes, and skunks !
🐸 Nocturnal Sounds Scavenger Hunt--Learn to identify common night sounds (like frogs, crickets, and barred owls) using listening stations and an after-dark audio challenge.
🌌 Stargazing & Storytelling--Connect ancient constellations to the behaviors of nocturnal animals, then gather 'round the campfire for S'mores.
🌿 Take Action Project --Girls will brainstorm ways to support local wildlife-like building bat boxes, planting native plants, or educating their communities-laying the foundation for the Outdoor Journey Take Action step.
🎨 Nature After Dark Art Lab--Use glow paint, natural materials, and shadows to create moonlit landscapes, animal silhouettes, and textured nature rubbings.
Hoots in the Hollow is an ideal way to complete steps of the outdoor badges for all Girl Scout levels, with programming tailored to each age group. Girls will leave with new knowledge, fresh air in their lungs, mud on their boots-and a deeper appreciation for the creatures who call the night home.
Girl Cost=$30- Includes Outdoor badges, a special program patch, craft supplies, S'mores, and overnight indoor accommodations.
Adult Cost=$15 - Includes a special program patch, craft supplies, S'mores and overnight indoor accommodations.
