How does flat, 2D fabric transform into a sturdy 3D bag that holds all your gear? Step into the design lab for a hands-on workshop where you bring creative style and real-world engineering together!

In this session, you take control of an electric sewing machine and build your maker skills. Dive into the hidden tech behind textile design-using geometry to map out seam allowances and harnessing mechanical physics, gear ratios, and tension to build super-strong interlocking stitches.

Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned maker, you will measure, pin, and stitch your way to a totally custom creation. You walk away with serious DIY skills, a cool project under your belt, and a durable, custom-designed tote bag that you engineered yourself!

Bring your personal style to life or let us supply the gear!

  • Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF): Show off your custom style! Bring 1/2 yard each of two coordinating woven fabrics (one for the exterior, one for the inner lining) and 1 1/4 yards of canvas strap for handles.
  • Materials Provided Option: Skip the craft store run! Choose to add-on a supply kit at registration, and we will provide the fabric and straps. (Colors and patterns vary-think of it as a mystery supply drop!)

A Note for Parents & Adult Allies: We can't wait to jump into this hands-on project with your Girl Scouts! Just a quick heads-up: this workshop involves youth using sharp pins, irons, and electric sewing machines. Because parts of the work require precise fine motor skills, adults are warmly welcome to attend and support any youth who may benefit from extra assistance!

Grab your spot, pick your pattern, and build your bag from scratch!

Notes:

  • Since this is an in-person event, there is a strict event capacity. We recommend keeping your registration to girl/adult ratios outlined in the Activity Safety Checkpoints to allow for maximum girl participation. All attending individuals, both girls and adults, must be registered in advance.
  • For the safety and supervision of our participants, each troop is responsible for ensuring that enough adults are present to meet Activity Safety Checkpoints. Those attending individually also need to be accompanied by an adult.
  • This event is open to registered Girl Scouts and girls interested in joining to discover what Girl Scouting has to offer.
  • We are sorry, but we cannot accommodate tagalongs (non-Girl Scout siblings and non-participating guests) at this event.
