Read the latest updates on the 2020 Convention from GSUSA. We will keep you updated as additional information becomes available. We will be updating other members and supporters starting today and we will also be sharing more information regarding this decision on the delegate website.
For 108 years, Girl Scouts of the USA has provided a framework from which girls have realized their biggest dreams—aligning their innovation, collaboration, and service for the betterment of our communities and the world. During this time, girls, adults, volunteers, and families have mobilized to make great things happen always keeping safety and care as top of mind.
Given all of this, the National Board held a special meeting on Tuesday, April 21, and voted to hold a one-time virtual session for our 55th National Council Session in October 2020. The board also voted to cancel G.I.R.L. 2020, including the Global Roundtable.
This decision was made with the health and safety of all members of the Girl Scout Movement at the forefront. As we’ve continued to monitor public health experts’ recommendations and forecasts, it became clear that Girl Scouts could not hold convention in person in October 2020 because we can’t host a large scale, in-person event and guarantee the health and safety of participants.
Every three years, Girl Scouts from all over the country gather together at the National Council Session and Convention to reinvigorate our membership, deepen our commitment to our Movement, and celebrate our successes. Together, we will:
Further, this decision allows us to honor the intent to bring the Movement together to address important business which will shape our future. The board made this decision now so that we can maximize planning time for the virtual iteration of the 55th NCS, while we also minimize any additional financial risk that members, councils, and GSUSA might incur for delaying such a decision.
We know the decision to cancel the in-person events, including G.I.R.L. 2020 and the Global Roundtable, will be disappointing for those of you whose delegate terms would have continued through Orlando. We’re also sure that you have lots of questions. As the board just made these decisions, please know that we will be following up as we have more specifics to share. We appreciate your patience as we pivot to our first-ever virtual NCS!
Regardless of the meeting format, what remains a constant is that Girl Scout delegates continue to drive our democracy. You and your fellow delegates will be deliberating and voting on six proposals and electing the National Board too. We’re implementing a delegate engagement plan—strengthening it to prepare for a virtual experience. We will also continue to seek and listen to input from you as we make this shift in meeting format.
Additionally, please note that GSUSA will refund all registrations in full (100%) for NCS, G.I.R.L. 2020, and other convention–related events and activities that registrants purchased directly through GSUSA.
